Although some computer users may actively seek pirated software in hopes of saving money, they are taking a big risk because the chances of infection by unexpected malware are one in three for consumers and three in ten for businesses, according to a new study (PDF) commissioned by Microsoft Corp. and conducted by IDC. As a result of these infections, the research shows that consumers will spend 1.5 billion hours and $22 billion identifying, repairing and recovering from the impact of malware, while global enterprises will spend $114 billion to deal with the impact of a malware-induced cyber-attack. Consumer electronics retailer Best Buy Co., Inc. has announced Ron Wilson as its new president and chief operating officer of its Canada operations, effective immediately. Ram Raju, President and CEO of Kivuto Solutions Inc., an Ottawa-based complex digital distribution service provider, has received the IMPACT Award from the International Talent Acquisition Centre (In-TAC), another Ottawa-based organization that connects internationally-trained IT professionals with local employers. Raju received the award for his continuing support of In-TAC’s efforts through Kivuto’s proactive hiring practices. In 2012 alone, Kivuto hired 16 graduates of In-TAC’s employment programs. Shaw Media today announced it has entered into a number of agreements with Corus Entertainment Inc. to strategically optimize its portfolio of specialty channels. In a series of transactions, Shaw has agreed to sell to Corus its interest in ABC Spark, Historia and Series+. Separately, Corus will sell its 20 per cent interest in Food Network Canada to Shaw. The freelance talent pool has grown stronger, a new survey suggests. Nearly seven in 10 (69 per cent) of advertising and marketing executives interviewed by The Creative Group said the calibre of independent creative professionals has increased in the last five years; among those, 22 per cent said it has increased significantly. Respondents cited “access to specialised skills or knowledge” as the greatest benefit of using freelancers.
